Raising confident, resilient women through fencing: A journey of confidence, empowerment, self-discovery, and breaking barriers.
At Pīwakawaka Fencing, the initiative to increase participation of girls in our sport is central to what we do, and is a core attribute and driver in who we are. Thanks to initiatives focused on empowering girls in our sport, fencing has seen a surge in young women and girls participating in recent years, challenging its traditional male dominance.
While many sports systems cater to our male counterparts, we're dedicated to being a positive exception. Our goal is to create a thriving and supportive space where women and girls can try, improve, and thrive in our amazing sport, while also welcoming and supporting men who share our values and passion for fencing.
By fostering an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued, our club not only contributes to the growth and development of individual athletes, but also enhances the overall appeal of the community of fencing, making it a richer and more inclusive sport for all.
Laying at the core of what we do are our key values, they are extremely important to us and they drive, guide, and help create our program, as well as bring a bit of fun and magic to everything we do:
Confidence
Empowerment
Participation
Accessiblity

Guided by our central pillars, we take action to achieve our mission:
We run women's-only training sessions multiple times a week, tailored to their specific needs. This gives them a time and space where they feel safe and can engage with the sport free of judgment, can learn in a way best suited to them, and can bond with their frineds and teammates.
Our women's training camp is in its third year, featuring female guest coaches, speakers, and specialists.
We partner with girls' schools, leading grassroots programs in nearly every school in the city, with female leaders at the helm.
We develop and support female leaders through community engagement, leadership development, and opportunities.
Increasing visibility of women's sport through our dedicated club women's page, and main social media pages, we put our ladies at the forefront and make sure their achievements and endeavors are celebrated and seen equal.
Female athletes learn differently to males, as well as having unique needs from them, we make sure to engage with experts and instructors who specialize in women's sport, female athlete health and well-being, and who will help us deliver something that will be catered to our female athletes unique needs.
